CIOp: Celebrating 35 years of research in Optics, Photonics and Technologies of Light

The Centro de Investigaciones Ópticas (CIOp) celebrated today 35 years of scientific and technological research in Optics, Photonics and Technologies of Light.
Created on September 12, 1977 to help advance the study and application of lasers, CIOp has grown to a thriving, major research institution. Today CIOp has a staff of over 56 researchers, professionals and technicians, and a growing PhD student population of 20 from all over Argentina and Latin America.

The CIOp-UNLP OSA/SPIE Student Chapter participated in the organization of today's event. Celebration activities started with the history of the institution told by Doctor Mario Garavaglia (first Director of CIOp). We then enjoyed a coffee while watching a compilation of photographs covering this past 35 years and sharing related anecdotes. After a lunch with traditional empanadas, a tango band entertained the audience with classic and contemporary pieces. The event ended with some more coffee and a guitar concert by SPIE Student Chapter Secretary Sebastián Gajate.
